Diatomaceous Earth (DE) for Swimming Pools

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a fine, powder-like substance made from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of algae. It is used in DE pool filters to provide superior filtration and keep pool water sparkling clean.

Why Use Diatomaceous Earth?

  • Superior Filtration: Captures particles as small as 2-5 microns, much finer than sand or cartridge filters.
  • Enhanced Water Clarity: Removes even the tiniest debris, leaving water crystal clear.
  • Cost-Effective: DE powder is affordable and offers excellent performance.

How DE Filters Work

Water flows through grids coated with a thin layer of DE powder. The powder traps debris, dirt, and particles, allowing clean water to pass through and return to the pool.

How to Add DE Powder

  1. Backwash the DE filter to remove old powder and debris.
  2. Mix the recommended amount of DE powder with water in a bucket.
  3. Pour the slurry into the pool skimmer while the pump is running.
  4. Allow the filter to coat the grids evenly with fresh DE powder.

Maintenance Tips

  • Backwash and replace DE powder every 4-6 weeks, or as needed.
  • Inspect and clean the filter grids annually to remove buildup.
  • Monitor the filter pressure gauge and backwash when the pressure rises by 8-10 psi above normal.

Benefits of DE Filtration

  • Provides the cleanest water for residential and commercial pools.
  • Reduces the need for additional chemical treatments by efficiently removing debris.
  • Improves swimmer comfort with clearer and more hygienic water.
