Pool Water Testing

Water Testing & Adjustments

Regular testing ensures your pool remains safe and balanced. Learn how to test and make the right chemical adjustments.

Why Water Testing is Important

  • Ensures water safety and prevents harmful bacteria growth.
  • Helps maintain proper chlorine and pH levels for swimmer comfort.
  • Prevents damage to pool surfaces and equipment due to imbalances.

How to Test Pool Water

  • Test Strips: Quick and convenient for basic readings.
  • Liquid Test Kits: More precise, commonly used by pool professionals.
  • Digital Testers: High accuracy but more expensive.

How to Adjust Water Balance

  • Low pH? Add sodium carbonate (soda ash) to raise it.
  • High pH? Add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to lower it.
  • Low chlorine? Use liquid chlorine or chlorine tablets.
  • High chlorine? Let the sun break it down naturally or use sodium thiosulfate.
  • High calcium hardness? Dilute with fresh water if necessary.
  • Low calcium hardness? Add calcium chloride.

How Often Should You Test?

  • Daily: Chlorine and pH levels (especially in high-use pools).
  • Weekly: Alkalinity and stabilizer levels.
  • Monthly: Calcium hardness and total dissolved solids (TDS).
